This is the proceedings of a workshop on emerging technologies in distributed systems organized by the Helsinki Graduate School in Computer Science and Engineering (HeCSE) held in Lammi on Jan 12--13, 1998. The program of the workshop consisted of invited talks, technical papers, and short poster presentations on a variety of topics concerning open distributed systems.
